About the distillery

Islay’s latest distillery (until the next one) sprang into life in October 2018 and is situated at the northern end of the island, near Bunnahabhain and Caol Ila. The dream project of the Hunter Laing group, headed by Stewart Laing and his two sons. To assist their vision, they brought in Jim McEwan, formerly of Bruichladdich, to design the stills and help create the distillate.

Did You Know

Ardnahoe is Islay's only distillery with worm tub condensers, and its stills have the longest lyne arms in Scotland.

Bowmore

Since Murray McDavid saved the distillery in 2000, with an asking price of £6.5 million, Bruichladdich has gone from strength to strength after a difficult initial period. Now under the ownership of Remy Cointreau, it is one of Islay’s most recognisable whiskies and brands.

Did You Know

Bruichladdich closed in 1994 and sat silent for six years before investors revived it in 2001.

Caol Ila

Islay's largest distillery, Caol Ila, dates to 1846 and endured multiple owners before its 1972 rebuild, coinciding with Brora's closure. Following 2011 investment, capacity grew to 6.5 million litres. Widely available officially and via independent bottlers, it's now part of the Johnnie Walker visitor experience.

Caol Ila is Islay's largest distillery, producing over three million litres a year, mostly destined for Johnnie Walker blends.
