Octomore 13.3 is a super-heavily peated Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Bruichladdich, created to explore the influence of locally grown barley alongside extreme levels of peat smoke. Distilled in 2016 and matured for five years, this edition was produced exclusively from Concerto barley grown on Octomore Farm on Islay and harvested in 2015.
The malted barley was peated to 129.3 PPM, yet Octomore 13.3 demonstrates the balance and complexity for which the range has become known. Maturation took place in a combination of first-fill ex-American whiskey barrels and second-fill European oak casks originating from the Rivesaltes region of France and Ribera del Duero in Spain.
Bottled at a powerful 61.1% ABV, Octomore 13.3 is presented without chill filtration or added colouring. Despite its formidable specification, the whisky combines peat smoke with sweet malt, fresh fruit, floral notes and a distinctive maritime character rather than relying on smoke alone.
The .3 designation identifies Octomore releases made using Islay-grown barley, making this an especially provenance-focused expression within Bruichladdich's experimental range. For enthusiasts of heavily peated Islay whisky, Octomore 13.3 offers an intriguing combination of local barley, distinctive wine-cask influence and high-strength bottling.
Colour
Barley straw.
Nose
Malt sugar and gentle peat smoke lead into fresh green fruit, rose, geranium, apricot and eucalyptus, followed by marzipan, ginger biscuits and honeyed melon.
Palate
Soft and initially sweet, with honey and brown sugar followed by restrained peat smoke. Lemon rind, seashells, malty biscuit, marzipan and coconut develop alongside hints of ash and boot polish.
Finish
The maritime character and peat smoke build, accompanied by honey, lemon, warm sand and marzipan, with peach and stewed pear bringing sweetness to the close.
