Longrow 21 Year Old is a highly regarded mature expression from Springbank Distillery’s heavily peated Longrow range. Produced in Campbeltown using traditional methods, Longrow offers a distinctive style of whisky that combines rich peat smoke with the depth and complexity developed through long maturation.
The 2023 release represents the final edition of this much-loved 21 Year Old expression, making it a particularly sought-after bottling among collectors and enthusiasts. Longrow is produced using double distillation and heavily peated malted barley, creating a spirit with a powerful yet balanced character.
This release was matured for 21 years in a combination of 65% sherry casks and 35% bourbon casks. The influence of the sherry casks adds richness and depth, while bourbon maturation contributes sweetness and oak character, creating a complex balance between mature fruit notes, smoke and spice.
Bottled in 2023 at 46% ABV, this limited release highlights the patience and craftsmanship required to produce long-aged Longrow whisky. With its mature age statement, traditional Campbeltown production and status as the final 21 Year Old release, this expression has become a notable collector’s bottle within the Springbank portfolio.
Colour
Colour: Deep, rich amber, reflecting two decades of maturation in sherry and bourbon casks.
Nose
Nose: Complex and deeply inviting, with Longrow's signature peat smoke present but beautifully integrated, layered with rich dried fruit, dark chocolate, and sherry sweetness from the cask maturation. Notes of leather, toasted oak, and a coastal earthiness develop slowly with time in the glass.
Palate
Palate: Full-bodied and sumptuously textured, opening with a wave of honeyed sweetness and dried fruit before the peat smoke asserts itself with quiet authority. Dark chocolate, warm cinnamon spice, and a rich, malty depth develop through the middle, with the smoke and sherry influence locked in a compelling and deeply satisfying interplay throughout.
Finish
Finish: Exceptionally long and warming, with lingering peat smoke, dried fruit, and a final note of rich, sweet oak that fades slowly and memorably.
Longrow
Founded 1973
Longrow is not actually a standalone distillery but a heavily peated variant of single malt whisky produced by the Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown, Scotland. Established in 1973 as an experimental peated malt, Longrow was named after a now-defunct distillery that once stood adjacent to Springbank. It is double-distilled and peated to between 50 and 55 ppm, offering a robust, smoky flavor profile distinct from the lighter Springbank or unpeated Hazelburn whiskies made at the same distillery. Longrow's core expressions include the Longrow Peated, Longrow Red - which varies annually with different red wine cask finishes, and aged expressions like the Longrow 18 and 21 Year Old. This whisky embodies the traditional, hands-on approach of Springbank, with all aspects of production, from malting to bottling, done on-site.
