Campbeltown, Scotland
Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch 14 is a limited-release Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky produced at Glengyle Distillery and bottled in 2026 at a natural cask strength of 58.3% ABV.
While Kilkerran is generally associated with a more lightly peated house style, the Heavily Peated series explores a substantially smokier side of the distillery. The malt is peated to around 45 PPM, giving the whisky considerable intensity while retaining the oily texture, cereal character and coastal qualities closely associated with Kilkerran.
Batch 14 was matured in a combination of 90% bourbon casks and 10% sherry casks. The bourbon-led maturation provides a sweet and relatively direct backdrop for the peat, while the smaller sherry component adds further depth without dominating the distillery character.
Official tasting notes highlight honeycomb, wholemeal toast, chargrilled seafood and smoky bacon on the nose, followed by lemon shortbread, melon and savoury ham on the palate. Peat smoke, citrus and a sweet, buttery texture carry through the finish.
Presented without chill filtration or added colouring, Batch 14 is an appealing release for followers of Kilkerran and enthusiasts seeking robust, cask-strength Campbeltown whisky with a distinctly savoury edge.
Nose

Kilkerran (Glengyle)
Founded 1872
The Glengyle distillery can trace its roots back to the heydays of Campbeltown and 1872. Like so many in the town, the distillery closed in the 1920s and the builds were used for a variety of purposes. It was only in 2000 when Hedley Wright, when faced with Campbeltown losing its regional status with the Scotch Whisky Association, bought what remained of the distillery to ensure there were 3 distilleries in the town. The first spirit ran in 2004, from stills acquired from the closed Ben Wyvis distillery. Enthusiasts were able to follow its development via the Work in Progress range, bottling under the name of Kilkerran. Since these early days, the distillery has gone from strength to strength, manned on a part-time basis by the Springbank team. A heavily peated range was recently added to the staple 12 year old, 8 cask strength offerings and the debut of the 16 year old. Due to the small production and high demand, Kilkerran is an increasingly sought-after distillery.
