A unique and characterful expression from GlenDronach, one of the Highland's most celebrated sherry cask specialists, the Port Wood takes the distillery's rich, fruity house style in a distinctly different and captivating direction. Inspired by Scotland's long and storied history of importing casked port wine during the 19th century, this expression has been finished for three years in port casks sourced from Portugal's prestigious Douro Valley — one of the world's finest wine-producing regions.
GlenDronach's signature richness provides an ideal foundation for port cask finishing, and the three-year finish in Douro Valley casks has added a vibrant layer of red fruit and wine-driven sweetness that lifts and complements the distillery's characteristic dried fruit and spice character beautifully. The result is a whisky that feels both rooted in Highland tradition and genuinely distinctive — a departure from GlenDronach's sherry-only core range that rewards the curious whisky drinker.
Bottled at 46% ABV without chill-filtration, the Port Wood retains its full natural texture and the vivid, wine-influenced character that makes it one of the more intriguing expressions in the GlenDronach lineup.
Colour
Colour: Deep ruby-tinged amber, with the influence of the port casks clearly visible in the glass.
Nose
Nose: Vibrant and fruit-forward, with notes of red berries, plum, and port wine sweetness, layered with GlenDronach's signature dried fruit richness, dark chocolate, and a gentle hint of warming spice.
Palate
Palate: Smooth and generously flavoured, opening with ripe red fruit and sweet port-influenced juiciness, developing into notes of dark cherry, toffee, cinnamon, and a subtle tannic structure from the Douro Valley casks.
Finish
Finish: Long and warming, with lingering red fruit, gentle spice, and a final note of sweet port oak that fades elegantly.
Glendronach
Founded 1826
The crown jewel in the Brown Forman Scotch empire started life in 1826 near the village of Forgue in Aberdeenshire. A perfect spot, surrounded by farms eager to sell their barley to the distillery, which continues to this day. GlenDronach had an unsettled 90 years or so, with various owners and the menace of fire damaging the distillery. In 1960, William Teacher & Sons made the wise choice to purchase the distillery, which already had a reputation for using sherry casks. This only grew when an expansion to 4 stills was completed in 1966, despite being a rather unsightly extension amongst all the traditional buildings. A period of closure in the 90s to this day is being felt amongst supporting its age statements before new owners decided to sell to the Billy Walker consortium. Through his use of casks and special releases, a new generation fell in love with the whisky. An expanding range has been cut back by Brown Forman, who paid a sizeable fee to become the new owners of the distillery along with BenRiach and Glenglassaugh.
