Named after James Allardice, the founding father of GlenDronach Distillery, the Allardice is a fitting tribute to the man who established one of the Highland's most celebrated sherry cask specialists in 1826. Matured exclusively in the finest Spanish Oloroso sherry casks for 18 years, this is GlenDronach's purest expression of its sherry oak mastery — a deeply rich, complex, and sumptuously flavoured single malt that consistently ranks among the finest heavily sherried whiskies available at this age.
What makes certain bottlings of the Allardice particularly special is a fascinating chapter in the distillery's history. GlenDronach closed its doors in 1996 and did not reopen until 2001, meaning that bottles released between 2013 and 2019 contained whisky that was older than the stated 18-year age — some of it distilled before the closure, quietly maturing through the silent years and adding an extra layer of depth and character to those releases. For collectors fortunate enough to have secured bottles from that era, this is a significant detail worth knowing.
Bottled at 46% ABV without chill-filtration, the Allardice retains its full natural richness and the gloriously deep sherry oak character that has made GlenDronach one of the most passionately followed distilleries in Scotland.
Colour
Colour: Deep, dark mahogany, rich and lustrous from 18 years of exclusive Oloroso sherry cask maturation.
Nose
Nose: Opulent and deeply complex, with rich dried fruit, dark cherry, and Oloroso sherry sweetness, layered with notes of Christmas cake, leather, dark chocolate, and warming baking spice. Walnut and a hint of aged oak emerge with time in the glass.
Palate
Palate: Full-bodied and sumptuously textured, opening with an intense wave of dried fruit, treacle toffee, and rich sherry sweetness, developing into notes of cinnamon, clove, dark chocolate, and a firm but beautifully integrated oak structure that speaks to the whisky's long years in the finest Spanish casks.
Finish
Finish: Exceptionally long and deeply satisfying, with lingering dried fruit, warm spice, and a final flourish of rich, sweet Oloroso oak.
Glendronach
Founded 1826
The crown jewel in the Brown Forman Scotch empire started life in 1826 near the village of Forgue in Aberdeenshire. A perfect spot, surrounded by farms eager to sell their barley to the distillery, which continues to this day. GlenDronach had an unsettled 90 years or so, with various owners and the menace of fire damaging the distillery. In 1960, William Teacher & Sons made the wise choice to purchase the distillery, which already had a reputation for using sherry casks. This only grew when an expansion to 4 stills was completed in 1966, despite being a rather unsightly extension amongst all the traditional buildings. A period of closure in the 90s to this day is being felt amongst supporting its age statements before new owners decided to sell to the Billy Walker consortium. Through his use of casks and special releases, a new generation fell in love with the whisky. An expanding range has been cut back by Brown Forman, who paid a sizeable fee to become the new owners of the distillery along with BenRiach and Glenglassaugh.
