This 2009 special 1st release Balvenie has been aged for 17 years exclusively in Traditional American Oak whisky cask before being transferred to barrels previously used in the production of Fortified Madeira Wine.
Colour
Deep Amber
Nose
Honeyed malt and orchard fruit (apple, pear) lead, with dried apricot and a touch of marmalade from the Madeira influence. Underneath, there's vanilla, soft oak spice, and a faint nuttiness, with a light floral lift.
Palate
Rich and rounded, opening with honey and stewed fruits (raisin, fig), moving into toffee and toasted oak. The Madeira cask brings a gentle wine-like sweetness and a hint of orange zest, balanced by warming cinnamon and ginger spice.
Finish
Medium-to-long, drying gradually from sweet fruit and oak into a warm, spicy close with a lingering trace of nuttiness and faint smoke.
