The pinnacle of the Isle of Arran Distillery's core range, the 25 Year Old represents the oldest age statement in regular production from one of Scotland's most respected island distilleries. This 2023 release is a whisky of genuine prestige and complexity — a quarter century of patient maturation at Lochranza distillery, presented without chill-filtration and at natural colour, allowing every nuance of 25 years in wood to reach the glass completely unaltered.
The cask composition here has been carefully considered. A blend of 65% bourbon barrels and 35% sherry casks, all finished for a final year in sherry hogsheads, creates a whisky of remarkable balance and depth — the lighter, honeyed vanilla character of the American oak providing an elegant backbone, while the sherry cask influence adds richness, dried fruit complexity, and a warming spice that deepens beautifully with the additional hogshead finish.
That Arran has reached this point — releasing a 25-year-old core range expression — is a remarkable achievement for a distillery founded in 1995 and one of the younger names in Scottish whisky. The 25 Year Old is proof, if any were needed, that Arran has come of age as one of Scotland's finest island producers.
Colour
Deep, rich amber, natural and uncoloured.
Nose
Nose: Rich oak with a gentle nutmeg note. Sweeter aromas of baked ripe figs, sultanas and black cherries.
Palate
Palate: Fruit cake with toasted almonds and cinnamon. The juicy zest of oranges and mandarins mellow perfectly with manuka honey, muscovado sugar, baked apricots and an interesting white pepper note that provides even more complexity.
Finish
Finish: Creamy and spicy with dark chocolate, walnuts and dark fruit compote.
Arran
Founded 1994
The Isle of Arran has played host to many distilleries, mostly illicit and the last legal distillery closed in 1835. What is surprising is that it took until 1995 for a still to run again as the Arran distillery at Lochranza came online. Financed mostly by Harold Currie who had retired from Chivas, the team also sought investment from 2000 investors who gave up £450 for a share of future whiskies. Many of whom turned up for the official opening, including a descendent of the last person to be killed on Arran for distilling illegally. Since the initial days, Arran distillery has prospered thanks to an array of cask types and special editions. The whisky, in time, has come of age and growing demand meant an expansion in 2017, with a new pair of stills. Things went even further in 2019 when a second distillery (Lagg) was established at the southern end of Arran.
